There was a name whispered around the town. These were whispers about a street that sent shivers down the spine of everyone who heard its name. It was an urban legend that came true and it made it difficult for residents a block away to sleep. Truly, Cold Street gripped the mind of everyone who knew about it, but not for the reasons that most believed. Here is the story of Cold Street.
Cold Street was the perfect street in every sense of the word. The residents were happy and content with what they had the moment they had the mental capability to be happy and content. Some say they lived longer as well, most likely due to the water which was the cleanest in the state. The stores were well stocked with high quality goods at an affordable price as well, so quality of life was at a high standard as well. The street itself was clean and in good condition. The reason it gripped the mind of anyone who knew about it was because all they wanted to do was live there. That street was like Paris in the brochures and it was only a short walk away.
There weren't any fences, nobody locked their doors and children sang songs as they skipped down the pavement, in sync. Each one would grow up to be important members of society, contributing to the community with time and money. A handful would become world leaders and some would create established international companies which grew the world along with their brilliance. The children seemed to reap most of the benefits so if circumstance were ever to force them to leave their home-street they would be so incredibly well-off financially that they may as well live like kings and queens in order to enjoy the same life-style. Some would call this luck, but those who have met a Cold Street resident know that they are intelligent and strategic.
There also seemed to be a preset personality type for all residents. It wasn’t ambition that drove them, but love. Love for their common man and the future of humanity. Each and every one of them knew when to be stern and knew when to be forgiving. Their lives were written out before them in glorious detail so they may choose the best path. Despite the hatred directed towards the residents from non-residents, they replied with kindness and friendship which in turn changed the jealous people into great people. Perhaps not as perfect as that of the Cold Street residents, but definitely a better man or woman as they would have been.
The store owners were friendly, helpful and made any conversation delightful with their wonderful personality. Despite the name the street was always comfortingly warm, no matter which season. You could walk outside in shorts during the worst winter and it would be a pleasant walk. It was almost like magic, but it was just a science project that one of the high-schooler’s living there installed in the pavement. However, if you were to try this on another street you most likely catch pneumonia.
Nobody died on Cold Street. You could be ancient man with every known disease, but if you moved to Cold Street you would live for another hundred years before you developed a slight cough. When the residents decided it was time for the big sleep they stepped out of its boundaries only to collapse, dead, inside a waiting coffin. It was grim, but the night before the deceased was celebrating like a king. Death was nothing to a Cold Street resident. It just meant their descendants had more space to work with.
Fortune seemed to favour the residents as well. All stores in the city sold scratch-and-win cards, but the best were sold on Cold Street. You wouldn't even need to scratch them to reveal the prize, just brush your thumb lightly across the card. Lo and behold, a million dollars or a hundred thousand on a bad day. Of course, nobody took advantage of this on Cold Street, but those visiting Cold Street tried to. There was an incident where a non-cold-street-resident visited the store and bought a thousand dollars worth of cards and none of them had so much as a penny to their value.
Now, you are probably wondering how this is possible. Who created this miracle of a street? Well, nobody knows. Some say it was the aliens, you know the ones. The aliens came down, added the street to the city, with its residents, and then flew back into space to have a good laugh about it. At least, that was the most commonly believed theory. Ludicrous, I know, but it is the best that non-residents could come up with. There was no logical reason that entered the average man’s mind as to why Cold Street was so perfect. Of course, that never stopped people from guessing.
Still, nobody could deny it was a dream location; one so clichéd and perfect that it boggles the mind. Everyone outside Cold Street worked and studied so they could one day live on Cold Street, but it was pointless. The houses were passed down from generation to generation and nobody wanted to leave. You know the phrase, "The grass is greener"? Well, on Cold Street, the grass was the greenest and thus it was the envy of everyone who had heard about it.
There once was a problem where non-residents would harass the people of Cold Street with public defacements such as graffiti or throwing toilet paper over the roofs. Of course it was washed away instantly by the rain to such a degree that the paint would wash away into the gutters with the toilet paper; another wondrous benefit of living there.
Yes sir, Cold Street was the place to be, no matter whom you are or where you are from.
Of course the murders were a problem, but as long as nobody knows, it doesn’t matter. Welcome to Cold Street.
