How Group Writing Improves Your Book

Whether you have been writing for years or for weeks, writing in a group has a profound effect on your work. From speeding up the process to fixing basic mistakes, writing in a group is certainly a method to consider.

Dedication

Dedication to a novel is essential for its completion. Every writer feels the urge to abandon their work or even forgets about it for too long. With this in mind, the writer faces a problem that isn’t directly involved in the writing process.

It is this lack of dedication that has writer’s setting alarms to write or perhaps setting unrealistic deadlines. Yet, there is another method that works far more effectively. Group writing.

Writing in a group, be it a large group or simply working with another writer, has shown across the board that writer’s in a community are more effective. Writer’s in such a group are dependant one each other to complete a book or piece. These writer’s push each other, ensuring that more work is done if not completing the novel.

If you have trouble with dedication to your work, find a writer you can work with. You will not regret it.

Feedback

It is not easy to show off your work to anyone, especially if you’re like most writers who are paranoid of someone stealing their work. Yet, finding someone to work with or show your work too is a great way to get feedback.

Such feedback will help you discover problems you never knew you had. For example. Writer’s usually have unique experiences and as such learn different lessons over time. Sharing what you learn with a writer who is struggling with a problem you used to have will be appreciated.

You will also receive such feedback when sharing your own work. Some writers are more intensive when it comes to grammar or methods of writing, others might point out holes in the plot or perhaps suggest improvements for your characters. With that in mind, being a part of an active writing community can be golden.

Swallow fear, share your work and provide your own input. It helps you and other writers in the long run.

Consistency

Consistent writing is an effective way of completing a novel, yet there are many distractions.

I found a writing community that I joined not too long ago which tackled this problem head-on. As it is my career, writing consistently has never been a problem for me. Yet, it is still a problem for most. The writing community required you to share how many words you wrote each day.

Whether it was hundreds, thousands or none at all, submitting your daily word count pushes you to improve. You see what you are capable of and try to improve upon it. Especially since your word count is visible to the rest of the writing group.

Peer pressure to be more productive sounds good to me and it might for you as well.

Writing Partner

Working with another writer to create a book has often been a method that famous authors have taken, such as Tom Clancy, Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, to name a few. Having a writing partner can help improve your work in a massive way, especially if your writing works well with another.

Whether you decide to take turns writing chapters or  write it all together, writing with someone else can improve the novel in several ways. The novel is completed sooner, the writing is more energetic and inspired. There are certainly points in every writer’s novel that lacks these qualities, so writing with someone else might help solve this problem.

Of course, this does mean that the novel bears two names, but that is not a bad thing either. Sharing profits and credit is nothing when it comes to great work. If you are looking for a more in-depth writing group, perhaps partnering up with another writer is for you.

Passion

Being passionate about your creative work is another essential. Writing that is uninspired, written to be written, lacks depth and quality. Yet, if you write with that passion in mind, your work is much better.

Retaining that passion over the years is difficult. Some writers take breaks from writing to keep their love for it alive, others dedicate themselves to writing constantly. Whatever method you use to keep your passion burning, a writing group is one more method.

Discussing your work with other like-minded individuals helps grow that writing energy. More than that, no matter what creative career you are invested in, finding people who share that passion help it thrive. No doubt you are a writer interested in finding out more about the work and the world.

Editing

When you eventually reach the final stage of writing a novel, the editing, you are in for an analytical experience. Scanning your work for mistakes and improving upon some scenes can be tedious work.

That is why it is often great to find a helpful member of your writing group who can aid you in your efforts. Editors don’t receive credit for writing work, so if you’re not interested in partnering with a writer, you can work with one still. Editors often join writing groups searching for such work, some groups are in search of great editors.

Some writing groups even provide free editing for active members of the community. Perhaps you start a group and make friends with an editor happy to help or simply work with such an editor. With all this in mind, joining a writing group often comes with benefits.

Finding a Group

There are many services out there that provide such writing groups, for example, Discord servers, Slack groups and other chat services. Yet, that depends on what you are comfortable with using. These services are large and filled with active members, so finding such groups is easy.

However, if you are not interested in joining such large communities, meeting and working with other writers in-person is another method. Once more, it depends on what you are most comfortable with. Finding like-minded writers isn’t too difficult.
